How does the 2026 World Cup bracket work?

For the first time ever, the World Cup features 48 teams split across 12 groups. Once the group stage ends, the top two finishers from each group — plus the 8 best third-place teams — advance to the knockout stage with 32 teams total. The full path to the championship:

1. Round of 32: 32 teams.
2. Round of 16: 16 teams.
3. Quarterfinals: 8 teams.
4. Semifinals: 4 teams.
5. Third Place Match & Final.
